Playing with Stravinsky
composition/improvisation 2003

I was asked to produce 'something special' for a concert following a performance of Oedipus Rex
by Igor Stravinsky at the Bern Biennale in Switzerland 2003. I decided to produce a new
re-composition of his life's work using 10 of his LP's including one of him conducting rehearsals.
I spent 48hrs in a local hotel working up material just using the LP's with mixer and loop pedals onto
minidisc. For the improvised concert I sat in a circle of manuscript paper as a projection of the composer
rotated onto it. Behind me the empty orchestra blinked into illumination as the first sounds began.
I am now looking for new places to perform the work with a view to releasing an edit from various
live versions in due course.
